Early Life
Born on February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York, Jordan grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. He attended Emsley A. Laney High School and later accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Despite early setbacks, Jordan's passion for basketball propelled him to greatness.
Basketball Career
Drafted third by the Chicago Bulls in the 1984 NBA draft, Jordan quickly made a name for himself. He was the Rookie of the year in his debut season. He led the NBA by scoring for ten seasons and winning six NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards. He also won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in the 1987-88 season.
Baseball and Return to Basketball
In 1993, Jordan left the NBA to pursue baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization. However, his love for basketball brought him back in 1995. On his return, he led the Bulls to three more NBA championships from 1996 to 1998. On his second retirement in 1999, Jordan became a part owner and president of basketball operations for the Washington Wizards. He made a brief comeback as a player for the Wizards in the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons. And retired for good in 2003.

Jordan holds the record for the most points scored in a playoff game with 63 points. He also boasts the NBA's all-time leading career scoring average with 30.1 points per game. Throughout his career, Jordan won a total of six NBA championships. He's without a doubt one of the greatest players in the sport. But apart from basketball, Jordan is also a successful businessman. His shoe brand, Air Jordan, has generated over $3 billion in annual sales. Jordan became the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets basketball team in 2010.
Personal Life and Cultural Impact
Jordan has had many marriages, divorces, and children. He was married to Juanita Vanoy in 1989, with whom he shares two sons and a daughter. The couple divorced in 2006. Jordan later married Yvette Prieto in 2013, with whom he has twin daughters. He's an avid smoker with a collection of approximately 200,000 cigars. His massive success on Basketball has made him a cultural icon. In 1996 he starred in the movie "Space Jam." He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2016. In December 2022, in recognition for his influence on Basketball, The NBA MVP trophy was renamed the "Micheal Jordan Trophy."
