Alice Hasters Biography
Early Life
Alice Haruko Hasters' personal experiences as a biracial person in a predominantly white society fueled her passion for addressing societal issues head-on. Following her education at the Cologne Sports University and the German School of Journalism in Munich, she pursued journalism on national television news services.
Journalism and Advocacy
Alice's journey began in journalism, where she made a name for herself in Tagesschau and Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb). Her unwavering dedication to championing racial equality brought her widespread recognition. She fearlessly used her platform to shine a light on the hidden nuances of racism and discrimination, advocating for greater representation and inclusion of Black voices in German mainstream media and culture. In 2016, she co-created the podcast "Feuer & Brot" with colleague Maximiliane Häcke, exploring important conversations surrounding race and identity.
Groundbreaking Book
In 2019, Alice released her debut book, "What white people don't want to hear about racism, but should know anyway," which became a bestseller in Germany. Fueled by her personal experiences and a desire to challenge the status quo, she explored uncomfortable truths about racism.
Podcast Hosting
Alice launched her podcast "Einhundert – Stories with Alice Hasters" from 2020 to 2022. The podcast, broadcast on Deutschlandfunk Nova, provided a platform for diverse stories and perspectives. Her dedication was recognized in 2020 when she received the Culture Journalist of the Year award from German journal medium magazin.
Recognition and Fellowship
During her fellowship at the prestigious Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles from January to March 2023, Alice worked on a project about dance and racialization. Her commitment to critically engage with the social impact of media earned her the esteemed Bert-Donnepp-Preis in the same year.
Interests
Outside of her advocacy work, Alice finds joy in baking bread and focusing on the warmth and sustenance of conversations. She also enjoys watching the TV show "The Good Place" and has a beloved cat named Momo. Fluent in English and German, her language proficiency allows her to effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
