Early Life and Education
Born on July 19, 1976, in Hammersmith, London, Cumberbatch made his acting debut at the age of 12 and later pursued a formal education in drama at the University of Manchester and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He quickly rose to prominence with his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking in the television film Hawking, winning the Golden Nymph for Best Performance by an Actor.
Breakthrough and Versatile Roles
Cumberbatch's breakthrough came with his role as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock, earning him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor. He continued to showcase his versatility, delivering a powerful performance as mathematician Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
